Defender 4K | How to Setup and Activate the Defender 4K (8MP) DVR Security System
In this video, we’ll show you how to set up your password and verification code for online viewing, as well as your recording settings such as motion detection.
The first time you turn Defender 4K on, you will be taken through the Activation screen.
Throughout the menus of the Activation wizard you will see references to IP cameras. Defender does not currently manufacture compatible IP cameras and setup of third-party IP cameras is not supported.
The system does not have a default password. You will need to create an 8 to 16-digit password containing a combination of numbers, upper- and lower-case letters and special characters. At least 2 of these character types must be included. This password is needed to set up mobile viewing on the Defender 24-7 app. If you forget your password, we will cover the process of resetting it in another video, the steps are also available in the user manual.
IP Camera Activation:
Enter the same admin password in this field. It will not affect operation of the system as there are no IP cameras included.
Check this box to create 3 secret questions you can use to reset your password . Do not right click on this screen! If you exit this screen, you will not be able to create your questions for password recovery.
Using this feature is optional but will save your password information to a USB thumb drive 32GB or smaller. To take advantage of this, insert a USB thumb drive into the front USB port on the DVR and click yes when prompted to export GUID. On the next screen, select the folder in the USB drive where you want to save the file, then click Export. Click back to exit this screen.
Similar to a smartphone, you can set an unlock pattern to access the DVR settings. Click and drag using the mouse to set the pattern, at least 4 dots must be connected.
No Changes are Required on this screen.
Select the menu language and click apply to continue. The next screen will give you the option for the wizard to start the next time you reboot the DVR, click apply to continue.
TIME & DATE:
Use this screen to set the time zone, Date format, system date and time. Click next once these are set.
Lists your network settings, no changes are required on this screen.
To enable viewing on your smartphone, click enable. You will be prompted to create a verification code for use in your Defender 24-7 app. We recommend writing this code down for when you set up the app. At this stage, you can set up your mobile app. To use online features, you must agree to the service terms and privacy statement before proceeding. This information can be found within the app for your reference. Scanning the QR code once your account is configured will connect the DVR to the app. This QR code can also be found on the bottom of the DVR if you decide to set up smartphone viewing at a later time. Click next to continue. PORTS/DDNS: No changes are needed on this screen.
HARD DRIVE STATUS:
Here you will see the capacity and remaining space on your hard drive. If the hard drive is full, it will automatically overwrite older footage. You can confirm your DVR is recording by the flashing red light on the front panel. To format, or clear the hard drive, click the Init button.
Continue past this screen by clicking next. Defender 4K does not include IP cameras for use with this model of DVR.
Continuous: Click Continuous to set all cameras to record 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Click Motion Detection to set all cameras to record only when motion is detected. This setting is recommended as it will record only when there is movement, storing only potentially useful footage. Clicking OK will close the setup wizard and your DVR will record using the settings you’ve configured. When the DVR is recording, you will see a Red film reel icon in the top right of the camera screen. If motion recording is set up, a bell icon will appear until motion occurs.
